Editorial Board Conflicts of Interest

Matt Ruen (Grand Valley State University)

Matt Ruen is the Scholarly Communications Outreach Coordinator for the Grand Valley State University Libraries. As a scholarly communication librarian, his responsibilities include advocacy and education on open access publishing as well as evaluating journals for the library’s open access publishing fund. His participation in RJJR is driven in part by frustration with current conversations about journal quality, as well as a strong professional skepticism regarding the role of commercial subscription publishers in scholarly communication. Matt identifies as a white cisgendered man.

Matt is currently involved in Grand Valley State University's journal publishing services and frequently participates in the Library Publishing Coalition and the Open Education Network. He is not currently receiving any funding beyond his Grand Valley employment, but in the past he has performed paid consulting for the Educopia Institute. 

Teresa Schultz (University of Nevada, Reno)

Teresa Schultz is the Social Sciences Librarian at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she leads scholarly communications efforts. This includes educating faculty and students about the complexities of scholarly journals and deciding where to publish, experience which she brings to her role in the project. She is researching how science journalists view and think about the concept of “predatory” publishers. She identifies as a white cisgendered woman.

Teresa has peer reviewed for Evidence Based Library and Information Practice, College & Research Libraries, Journal of Electronic Publishing, Journal of Open Educational Resources in Higher Education, Journal of Graduate Librarianship, and Librarian Resources & Technical Services. You can see where she has published through Teresa's ORCID profile. She does not currently receive income from anywhere other than UNR.

Joshua Neds-Fox (Wayne State University)

Joshua Neds-Fox is Coordinator for Digital Publishing at the Wayne State University Libraries in Detroit, Michigan. Joshua’s work at Wayne State has encompassed digital open access publishing, copyright and scholarly communications, and consultation with the Wayne State community on the very questions that RJJR seeks to address. He serves on the editorial board of the Library Publishing Curriculum and recently lead a team to develop a revision of the Library Publishing Coalition’s Ethical Framework for Library Publishing. His deep background with open access publishing gives him a familiar perspective on debates about actual and alleged “predatory” publishing and the mechanisms for evaluating appropriate outlets for scholarship. Joshua identifies as a white cisgendered man.

Joshua is closely affiliated with the journals published at the Wayne State University Library System, and tangentially affiliated with journals published by the Wayne State University Press. He currently has no further funding sources beyond his employer.

Brianne Selman (University of Winnipeg)

Brianne Selman is the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Librarian at the University of Winnipeg, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where she leads Research Support for faculty and students interested in publishing. She also does frequent scholarly journal landscape evaluations, and advises faculty on the intricacies of the scholarly publishing ecosystem, as well as author’s rights in copyright and other arenas. She does research on research, particularly looking at the cultural economics behind concentration in ogopolistic markets, and public infrastructure projects that look for transparent alternatives based in communities of care. The research she does on scholarly publishing and the profit motives behind it, as well as her practical experience in conducting thoughtful, needs-based scholarly journal evaluations, will help to shape the parameters of this project. Brianne is a white settler-Canadian, and is cisgender.

Brianne is currently recieving funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada. Her main financial disclosure is an interest in keeping her job.

Leila Sterman (Montana State University)

Leila Sterman is an Associate Professor and Scholarly Communication Librarian at Montana State University where she runs an institutional repository, hosts multiple journals on OJS, and advises authors at her institution on journal selection. Her previous work on prestige in publishing and communication across disciplines inform her practical work developing this platform and her desire to create a journal that encourages the critical evaluation of resources. She identifies as a white, cisgendered woman.

Previously, Sterman served as co-editor of the journal Pacific Northwest Library Association Quarterly.

Stephanie Towery (Texas State University)

Stephanie is the Copyright & Open Access Librarian at Texas State University where she leads the Copyright & Open Licenses department in educating campus about author's rights, open access, and fair use. Stephanie previously worked as a law librarian. She teaches Legal Information Resources at the University of Texas at Austin in the Graduate School of Information. Stephanie identifies as a white, cisgendered woman. She has no conflicts of interest and receives no funding from outside entities.
